Every dollar that we steward on behalf of our many generous donors is an investment in Adirondack people and communities.

our strategy

Here for Good

With diligent guidance from our Finance Committee, our investment strategy focuses on maximizing returns within an acceptable risk tolerance to generate grant dollars for today while also preserving resources to fund future needs.

We’re in this for the long-term to strengthen the Adirondack region.

  • 5+ year time horizon
  • 70% equities/30% fixed income
  • Available to all fund types

Intermediate Pool

A fund with an asset allocation tuned to a shorter time horizon.

  • 2-5 year time horizon
  • 30% equities/70% fixed income
  • Available to flexible donor advised funds

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of our most asked questions regarding our financial management. If you have more specific questions, please do not hesitate to contact Brandy Hobson, Controller, at [email protected] or 518-523-9904.

Adirondack Community Foundation has engaged Marsh People and Investments to advise us on our investment portfolio. Our objective is to have a diversified index fund portfolio that provides comprehensive exposure to the market while minimizing individual investment risk. The asset allocation is 70% equity and 30% fixed income for our main investment pool. Up to 3% of this allocation is in local place-based investments that support workforce housing, small business development, and lower-cost transportation loans in our communities.

Supporting fees on our funds are, in effect, a charitable gift to the region, because they fuel grantmaking, community leadership, nonprofit networks, convenings, research, and advocacy provided for the region’s benefit. Adirondack Community Foundation’s supporting fees are tiered based on the size of the fund. A full fee schedule is available upon request.

Adirondack Community Foundation’s spending policy for permanent funds is currently 4.25% of the average market value of assets at the end of the trailing 12 calendar quarters, including income, realized and unrealized appreciation and, in some cases, principal. This rate is set by the Board annually depending on investment performance and other factors. For certain permanent funds the Board may approve a different rate.

Adirondack Community Foundation’s Board Finance and Investment Committee, along with its investment consultant and committee, continually reviews its asset allocation targets, selects managers, and reviews performance. To see a list of our current Investment Committee members, please contact us directly.

The Council on Foundations has determined that Adirondack Community Foundation is in full compliance with the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations. This accomplishment provides assurance to the public that we maintain the highest of standards in the administration of our organization.
